Introduction

Many of us have admired the beauty of the big old Family Bible that we remember seeing at our Grandparent's house. Perhaps you now have that old Bible, it being passed on down to you through the family as the years went by, after it's earlier owner's crossed on over to be with our Lord Jesus Christ.

I remember very well, back when I was about ten years old, I discovered two old Civil War era Bibles on my Great-Aunt Verna's bookcase at her home in Skokie, Illinois. The pages were old and yellowed, and the leather covers were beginning to crumble. Inside their covers I found a record of my Baldwin and Martin ancestors recorded. That started an interesting personal quest, a hobby that lasted for forty years, to research my ancestry back even farther. That quest taught me a lot about history, and learning about history led me right back, once again, to the Holy Bible, as I realized how many of my ancestors were deeply religious, and that some paid a very, very high price for their convictions.

Of course, the day came that Aunt Verna passed on, and in the meantime I had grown up and moved away. Both Family Bible's had disintegrated more and more with the passage of time, so the family pages were removed, and since I was the only family member interested in genealogical research at that time, they were passed on to me. That's all that is left of my Great-Grandfather's Family Bible's, just those few family pages. Now, whenever I see an old Family Bible, I always stop to look at it, and I check out the engravings, and I look to see if any of the family pages are filled out. It always gives me a reverent and respectful feeling to hold such a wonderful antique work-of-art, like those old Family Bibles were. And, I realize, I'm holding the awe-inspiring Word of God in my hands!

Many years have passed. Recently I was at a local second-hand store where I spotted an interesting old Family Bible for sale. It occurred to me that it would be really nice if everyone could have their Grandfather's Family Bible. So, here it is! Though this specific copy isn't one of my own grandfather's actual Family Bible's, this one did come to me unsigned and with no filled in family pages, so I can only presume that this Bible was preserved specifically to be "passed on" by me. And, yes, I am a grandfather. Feel free to claim this digitized "Grandfather's Family Bible" as your very own!

You will notice that this was called a "Pictorial" Bible in it's day. The beginning of the Twentieth Century was a time when television and radio and movies did not yet exist. Thomas Edison only introduced his kinetophone, making "talkies" a reality in 1910. Cars and motorized travel were in the most rudimentary stages of existence. There were no computers. A Bible like this, with dozens of wonderful engraved pictures was very, very entertaining! As you might now expect, the pages with the engravings show a lot more wear and tear than the rest of the Bible. Perhaps the children of this Bible's previous owners often looked at these engravings and spent many hours imagining the details of the stories described of those ancient times. I hope you enjoy the engravings, and that now you will also begin wearing out these electronic pages of Bible text with applied study!

This Pictorial Family Bible, from about 1910, is twice as old as most of us who are now labeled as old. For a chuckle or two from that generation that is only half as old as the Pictorial Bible, from we who remember the fifties, check out the Chuckles & Laughs page.

About Bible Study

Grandfather's Family Bible is an easy-on-your-eyes alternative to the fancy Bible software packages that have all the bell's and whistle's the programmers can implement. However, it is not meant to replace them! There is a time for all things, a time for the thoughtful and meditative reading of God's Word perhaps enhanced with Grandfather's Family Bible, and another time for intense study using the tools included in feature-packed Bible software. In fact, I strongly recommend the excellent and free e-Sword Bible software package that is about as feature-packed as it can be. I also strongly recommend the free Berean Bible that comes in PC (It will run on old PC's, too!), Pocket-PC/Mobile and Palm versions. Grandfather's Family Bible is presented as an additional tool, as another method, of Bible Study. It is my hope that you enjoy Grandfather's Family Bible, and that you draw closer to the Lord Jesus Christ through the thoughtful study and personal implementation of His Holy Word.

Look for this SermonAudio.com Icon to click through to hundreds of additional sermons and lectures. Each chapter's click through will pull up materials available for that unique chapter!

The above chapter-by-chapter method of Bible Study is only one way to utilize these resources at Grandfather's Family Bible, its advantage being that you can read along as you listen and go a chapter at a time at your own pace. But there are two more study schedules you might want to use. Perhaps you are working around the house or you are out on the job where you can simply listen for several hours at a time. Just click on the links in the left column and you can listen to a whole book at a time, or a whole book plus the McGee lectures a whole book at a time. Yet another way to study God's Word is to use the Study Schedule link on the top horizontal menu, where you can go through the Bible and McGee's lectures in only one years time!

John A. McDonald's Thru The Bible Radio MP3 Archives web site also provides CD downloads, each set of files being one CD's worth of J. Vernon McGee's lectures. Burning copies to listen to in your car is now an easy matter. However, it is even easier to simply buy the CD Sets already professionally made directly from Thru the Bible.

If you have just listened to the McGee Guidelines, you may continue on through the chapter-by-chapter study by clicking the green arrows:

Adjustable Viewing

Please notice the three small page icons at the top of the center column on most pages. Clicking on these icons will change the typeface size of the pages to small, medium or large. This does not enlarge the page itself, but only the type size.

To enlarge or decrease the scan and/or page size, assuming you are using the Internet Explorer browser, look toward the bottom right of your screen. You should see a Magnifying Glass icon and a Percentage Figure and a small clickable Black Triangle. Click the Black Triangle and click again on the percentage of increase or decrease you would like to use when viewing the page and/or the Bible Scans.

Or, alternatively, perform a combination keyboard stroke CTRL(+) or CTRL (-) to enlarge or decrease your page and/or Bible Scan viewing size. If you have a sight disability or are unfamiliar with computers, then this simple method is the easiest way to enlarge or shrink a web page for easy viewing when using the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser.

The Pictorial Family Bibles true picture width and height measurements are actually fairly large, as I've optimized the scans at a width of 1200 pixels. For this reason, if you use less than a 1280 pixels wide resolution, you will not be able to see the whole page width of this site on your screen without scrolling left and right. I have implemented this 1280 pixels width site design because wide screen monitors are quickly becoming the norm. Personally, I am currently using a 1280 pixels wide screen resolution on a 4:3 (standard, not a wide screen) monitor.

About Thru The Bible Radio Expenses

Gifts To Ministry - Automatic Giving

If this website and the Lectures of Dr. McGee prove to be of value to you, perhaps you could contribute toward the expenses incurred by Thru The Bible Radio in broadcasting Dr. McGee's lectures throughout the world, whatever the Lord see's fit to lay on your heart according to your means. Every dollar is a great help in leading more unsaved people to Jesus Christ. Though Dr. McGee went home to the Lord in 1988, his radio ministry is still growing and expanding over more and more of the earth. The worldwide work of Thru the Bible is supported entirely by the gifts of generous and faithful listeners. Approximately $12.5 million was invested in foreign-language broadcasts over the last year. Although listeners in other lands do contribute as they are able, the cost of these programs is largely covered by listeners in North America. Contact Thru The Bible through the above links to make your donation or call Thru the Bible at 1-800-65-BIBLE. YOU can help spread the Gospel worldwide with Dr. McGee in this very simple and very easy way! Remember... millions of unreached people have no computer access, but the Thru the Bible radio broadcasts can reach them! And remember to pray for this excellent radio ministry!

Links To Other Sites

Reaching the unsaved with the Gospel Message is the #1 goal of this web site, and your help in spreading the word about Grandfather's Family Bible is certainly needed, wanted and appreciated! Be aware that links or quoted materials mirrored here from other web sites may go to information not quite "in tune" with the teachings of Dr. McGee. He was a godly man, an excellent witness of his day, and he was full of wisdom and Bible knowledge. Yet, there are many more saints who have additional insights into the inexhaustable supply of knowledge and wisdom found within God's Word that Dr. McGee never broached due to his time limitations. When confronted with seemingly inconsistent viewpoints on something, simply study things out in comparison with what the Holy Bible says to reach a conclusion. Do word studies to see if the translation is currently faithful to the original Greek and Hebrew. The meanings and subtleties of words sometimes change over time. No interpreted translation is absolutely true to the autograph. But if you study honestly with faith, the Holy Spirit will open up the Word to you as an inexhaustable panorama of knowledge and beauty! God will show you that the Holy Bible is true.

Off-Site Links To KJV Text

Many web sites need to be able to link to an online Bible. I have designed this site so that web designers can link to any Bible verse. Web site designers with this need can simply view the GFB source code to see the embedded verse-by-verse link code.

Note that the XL-KJV also contains these internal links, so if you are designing a web site that needs its own Bible, you can download and easily adapt the XL-KJV html files to your needs. The font size can be changed in the coding very easily.

Large Print XL-KJV v.1.1

XL-KJV antivirus report at download3k.com

On the top horizontal menu is a link to the XL-KJV v.1.1 Holy Bible. Yes, it has an Extra Large font. This is an even larger font-sized Bible than the three font icons at the top of this column provide for. It is especially designed for sight-impaired readers, and is coded in very simple HTML. It is no-frills for simple and easy navigation, and it does include links for the Wagner audio files (download Wagner files seperately). Click the top horizontal menu bar link to view or download the XL-KJV, and if you know of any sight impaired people that might like having a copy, then download the xl-kjv.exe file. It should run well even on old machines. The XL-KJV HTML Files plus the Wagner KJV Audio Files will all fit on a DVD and can even be run from the DVD if you don't want to put it on your hard drive. I hope this will be of service to the sight-impaired. Give away a few copies!
